Cycling from Smithers, British Columbia to Whitehorse, Yukon.Stage from Meziadin Junction to Bell II Lodge following Cassiar Highway northbound. |
Yesterday, the mountain peaks were not visible due to the low-lying clouds. Today, the clouds are even lower and free the view of the mountain peaks. But now the area in between is missing. |
After 23 miles the first and only major change of today's stage comes: on the Bell I bridge we cross the Bell Riverfor the first time, a tributary of the wet river. The roadway of the bridge consists of a grid. |
The section between Meziadin Junction and Dease Lake is one of the loneliest roads in Canada. North of the bbridge, the Cassiar Highway roughly follows the course of the Bell River and gains elevation very slowly. |
Encouraging: Only 530 miles to go before the Alaska Highway is reached. |
On the Cassiar Highway, there are still some small wooden bridges that date from the construction of the highway in the 70s. |
The southern area of the highway leads wooded scenery. Lonely, wooded scenery, to be precisely. |
Even if there are only few vehicles travelling on the Cassiar Highway, as a cyclist you should always be aware of the traffic, since not every user of the road is traveling with a vehicle. Also bears have a right to use the road. |
In the early evening we reach the Bell 2 Lodge, named after the second bridge over the Bell River, which is just behind the building. Heli-skiing takes place here in winter, and in the summer there are many cyclists to be found here. |
