Cycling from Smithers, British Columbia to Whitehorse, Yukon.Stage from Bell II Lodge to Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park following Cassiar Highway northbound. |
We start early, there is no time to wait for better weather. And no hope for a sunny day anyway. Behind the Bell II Lodge the Cassiar Highway crosses the Bell River for the second time. There are still low hanging clouds above us, we can't see any further than to the top of the bridge. Not a good sign, considering the fact that we make an elevation gain of 850 m today. |
North of the Bell II Lodge the Cassiar Highway follows the Ningunsaw River, to our left hand we can see the Ningunsaw River Ecological Reserve. |
At todays weather there is no difference between a roadway made from steel or made from wood: they can't be any more slippery. |
The low-hanging clouds we saw this morning most probably do still hang on the same altitude. They seem to be closer to us since we already made an elevation gain of 1300 ft /400m. |
Here, on the southern part of the Cassiar Highway, we share the road with several black bears. While the bear mom builds up in full size, the offspring hides in the bushes. |
Their curiosity causes the young animals to stand on their hind legs too to have a better view of what is going on. Then all three disappear in the bushes. |
Tonight we stay at Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park, a very bike friendly park. |
At least after the construction of the tent we are lucky: the rain fades away and we can cook our dinner without being disturbed by raindrops. |
