Cycling from Smithers, British Columbia to Whitehorse, YukonStage from Tagish to Carcross following Klondike Highway. |
After a few minutes we pass the Carcross Desert again, the so-called smallest desert in the world. Today it feels like the coldest desert in the world. |
The rest of the day we follow the Klondike Highway northbound. |
Roughly 12 mi / 20 km south of Whitehorse the Klondike Highway joins the Alaska Highway. |
South from Whitehorse we make a short stop at Miles Canyon. Here the Yukon River makes its way through lava rock. There used to be tough rapids whose white spray was reminiscent of the mane of white horses - hence the name Whitehorse. |
Looking back to Miles Canyon. |
Entrance to Whitehorse, our finish line: behind us there are lonely highway, countless encounters with bears and a memorable hailstorm. |
Photo stop at the Klondike steamship built in 1937. The ship was on duty sailing the Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City during the gold rush. With the completion of a land connection to Dawson City, demand went down and shipping traffic ceased. Today the ship rests on the banks of the Yukon River and has become a symbol of the city. |
In Whitehorse we follow the cycling path (the first cycling path for ages) along the Yukon River into the center. |
